“For over 30 years the students at Sparsholt College have benefitted enormously from support and collaboration with Hampshire Carp Hatcheries. Student groups at all levels regularly visit the fish farm to learn the practical skills of ornamental and coarse fish farming, i.e. feeding fry in a hatchery, undertaking health checks for parasites, environmental monitoring and preparing ponds for stocking.
HCH also take students on work experience blocks which are a great opportunity for training and can often lead to future employment.
Another important area of support from HCH to the College is for fish food research in collaboration with commercial feed manufacturers such as Coppens and Tetra. Each year students undertake industry led feed trials, testing key nutritional parameters, such as protein level, novel ingredients, feed rate or dietary pigment on fish supplied by HCH.
This work has contributed greatly to our understanding of ornamental fish nutrition and is another great opportunity for the students which would not be possible without HCH.
