Will has joined us in the build up to Easter when all of the aquatic retailers require their stock. This is what he has to say about his experience so far.
“To my amazement I am now at the end of my third week at Hampshire Carp Hatcheries, with operations so busy the days seem to pass by in a flash. I now feel well integrated into the operations of the farm as fish orders continue to flood in with the first glimmer of spring sunshine, early morning starts certainly have been on the agenda. The day starts by counting and quality checking each fish for customer orders before being bagged with oxygen and safely boxed for dispatch in rapid time.
When not in the fish house we are out on the farm netting ponds, grading fish or ‘shopping’ for all of 70 lines of fish to bring into the fish house for sales or in preparation for the beginning of this year’s spawning. I have been lucky enough to have spent time in hatchery sorting through this year’s orfe and goldfish broodstock and after a successfully spawning we will be expecting around 250,000 tiny blue and golden orfe fry to hatch in the coming week.
The fry are closely cared for in the hatchery for up to a fortnight before being released into limed and fertilised fry ponds. Enjoy the photos from the past two weeks that also includes some of the large koi broodstock we have just harvested.”
