Sorting the koi for quality is a highly skilled but favourite job.
The koi are sorted in batches of approximately 30 fish and moved using tiny circular bats/nets that ensure they receive no damage to their fins, scales or skin.
If their colouration is non metallic and not strongly defined they get sorted into ‘c’ grades. We do find that their colours will however continue to deepen and develop. These represent about 40% of the stock.
Those whose colours are especially strong we sort as ‘select’ koi and they are kept on the farm to ongrow a second season. (about 10%) They will be further ‘polished’ at harvest and those whose colours have not developed as promised are deselected and put back into our standard ‘mixed koi’ grade.
So our Standard mixed koi represent about 50% of our koi and have a broad mix of colour and strong UK vigour.
